The Ghostly Light

Continuing on with my scary stories theme for the blog, I am including here another tale adapted from Frederick Stonehouse’s first book Haunted Lakes, (reprint, 2023). This one is about a mysterious green light that seems to come out of nowhere, and disappears just as suddenly. You decide for yourself what it could have been.

The Ghostly Light

An old lighthouse keeper’s family had perished while making a journey on a small rowboat from a nearby island back to their home. The lighthouse keeper was so overcome with grief, that he found it difficult to get by with his everyday life and resume his normal duties of guiding ships safely back to shore. Because of this, on one stormy night he forgot to trim down the wicks that turned on the lighthouse light. It went out and a group of sailors crashed into the rocks because they could not see where they were going.

All of a sudden and out of nowhere an eerie green light appeared on the shore and the sailors could see through the piercing black night of the sky. They jumped into the waters and swam to shore all the while being guided by the ghostly green glow. When they reached the shore, the light had vanished seemingly into nowhere. All of a sudden, it reappeared again off into the distance. The sailors followed it all the way to a cabin where they found the lightkeeper collapsed. He did not survive and the green light had vanished again and was nowhere to be found.

Was the green light guided by the ghost of the light keeper?

Or did the light keeper fulfill his last important duty by leading the sailors to safety?
